When The Apes first got together in 1988,  the music scene is Morgan had gone from Classic Rock and Roll, to the Pop-like jingles of artists like Debbie Gibson, and Tiffany. Brad and Scott both wanted to get back to the basics. Rap was barely on the radar when Brad and Scott sat near the dual deck stereo to record "We are the Apes", which mixed tough lyrics to Edgy "Beat Boxing". It was very successful on the local Cub Scout circuit of Pack 181. But it was too "Before it's time" to really hit the Mainstream.
"Parents just don't understand" was still 6 months away. Some say that The Apes were trailblazers for artists like Snoop Doggy Dogg, P Diddy, and even Eminem.
Morgan County Historian Linda Smith, who chronicled the career of "The Apes" said: "'The Apes'  were new for the county. If it didn't come on KISN 97, people in Morgan didn't hear it. If it weren't for 'The Apes', I don't think this Jungle music they call rap would have made it past the county line in Weber Canyon.'The Apes' showed people it was okay to 'shake their thing', or what ever kid's say these days."
"When we first heard 'Grandmaster Flash' I remember thinking :'This stuff is going to be big one day.' We didn't really know what to call it. It was like these cats were talking and singing at the same time." said Scott Anderson who is credited the line of "We are Apes in Style" in the song "We are the Apes.
Following their humble success with "We are the Apes", the duo went back into the studio to record their second single "Johnny got on drugs". It was a true to life story of a kid from a small town, much like Morgan, who moved to a bigger town. It talks about his struggles to find himself. Unfortunately Drugs found him first. It is full of good old fashion rock and roll. The Chorus consisted of the group screaming into the Microphone "Johnny got on drugs. Oh No." to end in a soft, but haunting near whisper of "And Johnny died."
"We really wanted to reach out to the kids of today, or that day, I guess I should say" said co founder Brad Anderson. " I know it wasn't more than 'smarties' and Candy cigarettes for most kids, but we just wanted to let them see what is down that road of drugs." The song wasn't only a hit in the Mellot's Barn, it even made it's way to the Carrigan's nearly 1/4 mile away.
But soon the bright lights of fame grew dim. The fans had learned that "The Apes"not only didn't play their own instruments, they didn't even play instruments at all. The Guitar hadn't lost it's steam like "The Apes had" hoped. "I really thought that  people would get sick of some guy playing with one of those Guitars. We found out that wasn't so. Scott wouldn't learn the trumpet for 2 more years, and the plastic recorder I learned in 5th grade didn't have the 'stay power' Doctor J. said it would. It was really tough"
It was then that The Apes decided to pack it in. They had just recorded Arizona Nights but saw no use in releasing it. Apparently the Instrument-less music had died.
Both Brad and Scott went on to dabble in a few other musical ventures. Mainly "The Back Seat B's" and "Tiger Back". But neither band had the feel of "The Apes". Brad even had a short stint of acting as he played an extra in the Morgan High School Production of Deadwood Dick. He played the, non speaking, role of a man who sits in a bar.
Scott's acting career was slightly more successful as he even had the chance to get "Head shots" taken, and had a lead role in the Centerville Community theater rendition of Noises Off. "It was really exciting to get my 'head shot's' done. I felt like a star for a little while. It was neat." said Scott of his "Head Shot" days.
But in 2005, The Apes decided that they have been away long enough. They plan on using a few musicians to help them spread the music once again. They know it's been too long. So won't you please help us in welcoming back...THE APES.

We're back!!!

The Band that ruled the school in the 80's!!!
